Movie Reviews and Reflections

WALL-E

A Disney’s/Pixar Wall-e is story of a robot named Wall-E of course, who is designed to clean our environment because the earth on that time is covered with too much waste that humans produced and abused. Wall-E’s everyday routine is to clean the mess while the people are away from the earth then suddenly another robot came to earth to search for a possible life form to prove that earth is now ready to lived by, her name is Eve. The two robots met on their way and suddenly this Wall-E fell in love with EVE and follows her to outer space on an adventure that changes the destiny to them and to the humanity.

REFLECTION: In this movie I realized that being too much dependent on technology and too much dependent on machines is not good. Why? Take first the example of how did the earth in the movie being covered by the toys of science. Technology indeed contributes easier living so as the machines. But they still become all garbage even though it already helps the people make their life easier but too much on everything is bad. I realized that we must not forget to make use of our bodies to do things on our own and not rely much on robots to do it for you. This movie emphasizes the responsibility to protect our environment so that future generations may able to see it and able to enjoy it. But I feared that technology becomes our buddy on everything and I think most of us only want pleasure and easy process than finding difficult tasks.

SURROGATES

Another science fiction-action film based comic book series of the same name. Played by Bruce Willis as FBI Agent Tom Greer who ventures out into the real world to investigate the murder of surrogates, Radha Mitchell as Greer's partner Agent Peters, Rosamund as Greer's wife Maggie, Boris Kodjoe as Greer and Peters' boss Stone, with Ving Rhames as the anti-surrogate religious leader Prophet, and James Cromwell as the creator of the surrogates Lionel Canter. The concept of the film starts on the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows robots to be used by humans to interactively purchase and to thing for them and interact with society.

REFLECTION: In this movie I was amazed the way robots tend to act the real human in our society. But there still this big risk that robot bring. Technology is the reason behind. Despite the odds technology still continues its innovation and it still develop new ways to the future. The good thing about this movie is that it features the talent and skill of humans on creating things but humans also creates his destruction. The movie tells us even though how far technology could brings us easy life but it could also lead us to our vain. Too for everything is not good. But however with technology and proper utilization of technology human life becomes a lot easier. If we abuse these things, if we get too much dependent on these things it is a big problem.

I-ROBOT

I-Robot is a 2004 science-fiction action movie directed by Alex Proyas. Will Smith stars in the lead role of the film as Detective Del Spooner. The story takes place in the year 2035 in Chicago, in a world where robots are widespread and used as servants and for various public services. Del Spooner (Will Smith) is a Chicago police detective who dislikes the rapid advancement of technology, including robots.

Spooner developed distrust for robots due to an incident in his past involving the death of a little girl. Both Spooner and the little girl were in a car accident; a robot passing by stopped to help, but despite Spooner's pleas, the robot saved him instead of the girl, as the robot calculated Spooner had a better chance of survival than the young girl. Spooner has nightmares of the girl drowning and the robot ignoring his commands to save her, and is forced to live with survivor's guilt and a robotic arm and lung developed for him after the accident. Spooner is assigned to investigate the death of his friend Alfred Lanning (Cromwell), the robotics scientist who created his replacement arm and founder of U.S. Robotics (USR), who allegedly committed suicide. Lanning communicates through a holographic projector, providing clues to the mysteries Spooner must solve.

REFLECTION: The movie emphasizes the reality of how technology can harm people. It also sends a message that people must never put their full trust on technologically created things should I say man made things. As I see the movie years ago, I always remember what if all the utility personnel, army men, workers to do job for is not a human who will be paid but a robot that only needs a single purchase, little maintenance, with single program instruction can do all the work for you. Wow, I think many people will make them hard to find a job for this. Aside from that This robots are programmed to do things according their purpose and they are controlled on a single what do you call super computer server that manages them, now the biggest mistake, because humans are very talented and they are not always satisfied on their own achievements they created a program that can interact with people as if it were a real human, it thinks, It analyzes and of course if decides. Now humans never anticipated that these programs who once become their slave become an enemy and it could kill them. The movie emphasizes that we humans always look for easy and more convenient living and we put risk ourselves in the hands of these robots which is wrong.

EAGLE EYE

Eagle Eye is a 2008 thriller movie directed by D.J. Caruso. Led by the stars Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan. The two portray a young man and a single mother who are brought together and coerced by an anonymous caller into carrying out a plan by a possible terrorist organization. The United States armed forces have a lead on a suspected terrorist in Baluchistan but getting a positive identification, before using a drone aircraft to kill him without harming innocent civilians, proves difficult. The Department of Defense's computer system recommends that the mission be aborted. The Secretary of Defense (Michael Chiklis) agrees with the abort recommendation, but the President orders the mission be carried out anyway. This turns into apolitical backlash when all of the victims turn out to be civilians, and retaliatory suicide bombings target US citizens in response.

REFLECTION: It is not just a simple computer that could do some threat to humanity. This level of invention can created chaos to human kind. The movie delivers a message to us that computers can be a threat to us. Computers are created by humans so it performs how it is being programmed. The movie emphasizes that too much dependent on computers can harm our security and our dignity. This supercomputer called ARIA is capable of everything even the privacy of anyone on its control. What more alarming is that the supercomputer on the movie was very intelligent even government controls functions can be replaced by its actions.

PIRATES OF SILICON VALLEY

Pirates of Silicon Valley is a 1999 movie based on the book Fire in the Valley: the Making of the Personal Computer by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine. It is a made-for-television docudrama written and directed by Martyn Burke which documents the rise of the home computer (personal computer) through the rivalry between Apple Computer and Microsoft.

REFLECTION: I never expect this movie is kind a boring because I watch and reviewed the first four movies were awesome to view. The movie is all about the history of how the two computer related companies’ starts and succeed. The main actors in the story were none other than the founders of Apple and Microsoft, established business enterprises. The film is a documentary like film which shows comparison of their way and how they deal with other business especially those within the same industry. The movie also shows the reality of a group of persons capable doing something to achieve their goals. The title is just perfect for the story that is rivalry between Mac and Windows was born.
